Bai Ling (born October 10, 1970) is a Chinese actress. "Bai Ling" in Chinese means "White Spirit/Light". Her father was a music teacher, and her mother was a stage actor and dancer. Soon after her birth, she moved to Sichuan to live with her grandmother. She became a "soldier" in the People's Liberation Army in Tibet at the age of 14. Her main activity there was to entertain with musical theater. After her service, Ling became a performer in a local theater in Beijing where she eventually became involved in the pro-Democracy protests in Tiananmen Square in 1989. She came to New York in 1991 to attend New York University's film department as a visiting scholar. She soon found work in the Hollywood acting industry with her first English-language role as a villain in "The Crow." Ling from then on found steady work in playing various character roles from the villainous Miss East in "Wild, Wild West" to a Chinese interpreter in Oliver Stone's "Nixon" to a part in "Anna and the King," in which she was forced to cut her long hair short for the role.
Her appearance in the controversial "Red Corner" in playing a pragmatic Chinese People's lawyer jeopardizes her returns to her homeland every year since the film's release. Since that time, she has appeared in a number of American movies including Star Wars: Episode III (2005) playing the role of a senator, and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) as Mysterious Woman. Bai Ling has also featured in many movies such as Beautiful Country (2003), My Baby's Mama (2003), and Paris (2003). Some of Bai Ling's early movies include Shan cun feng yue (1987), Hu guang (1988) as Jing Huan, Crow, The (1994) as Myca, and Dead Funny(1994) as Norriko. She was named one of People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" in 1998. According to Bai Ling, acting is a great job. She has been quoted as saying that in acting, you can defy how society tells you to behave and allow other parts within you to be expressed.
