Benicio Del Toro (born February 19, 1967) is an actor. He was born in San German, Puerto Rico and grew up in Santurce, a district of San Juan, Puerto Rico. His parents, Gustavo Del Toro and Fausta Sanchez-Del Toro, were both lawyers. Benicio's mother died of hepatitis when he was nine years old. Benicio attended Academia del Perpetuo Socorro (The Academy of Our Lady of Perpetual Help), a Catholic school in Miramar, Puerto Rico. At age 13, he moved to Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, and attended Mercersburg Academy, a boarding school.
During the late 80s, he made a few TV appearances, most notably on an episode of "Miami Vice" (1984) and in the NBC miniseries "Drug Wars: The Camarena Story" (1990) (mini). His first role was Duke the Dog-Faced Boy in Big Top Pee-wee (1988). In the James Bond film Licence to Kill (1989), Del Toro was the youngest actor ever to portray a Bond villain, only 21 years old at the time. His roles in Fearless (1993) and China Moon (1994) gained him more critical notices. Then inn The Usual Suspects (1995), an Oscar-winning film directed by Bryan Singer, Del Toro won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting actor for the role. Del Toro took his first leading man role in Excess Baggage (1997). In 1998, Benicio Del Toro took a leading role with Johnny Depp in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998).
