James Todd Smith (born January 14, 1968) is an American hip hop artist better known by his stage name, LL Cool J (an abbreviation of "Ladies Love Cool James"). He has also appeared in several films. LL Cool J was born and grew up in Queens, New York City. In 1984, when LL was sixteen, he met Rick Rubin, a student at NYU, together, they made the single, "I Need a Beat," and sent to a record manager named Russell Simmons. And in 1985, Rick and Russell created the infamous Def Jam record company. LL's first album, "Radio," was released in 1985, and this was also the year LL started his acting career. LL first starred in the movie Krush Groove, a semi-biographical account of Russell Simmons' career. In 1986, LL had a cameo appearance in the movie "Wildcats," and he made the theme song for that movie. His first starring role, which was in the movie "Out of Sync," had also been released.
His big break in film came in 1998, when he was in the movie "Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later." In 2000, LL won a Blockbuster Entertainment Award for the best supporting actor in "Deep Blue Sea"). He starred in In the House, an NBC sitcom, before releasing Mr. Smith (1995), a double platinum hit. His next album was 10 from 2002. His latest album, Definition, came out in 2004. His biggest hit so far from the album is the song "Headsprung". Other hits include "Hush".
