Kurt Russell was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on Saint Patrick’s day 1951. One of the few people to have made a successful leap from child actor to movie star, Russell made his first appearance in a bit part in the 1961 film, 'The Absent Minded Professor'.
However, Russell’s first major debut came with a part in the Elvis Presley film 'It Happened at the World Fair' (1963), in which he kicked the king of rock’n’roll on the shin. This appearance prompted Walt Disney to sign Russell to a contract and, over the next few years, Russell appeared in a number of Disney vehicles, such as 'Follow Me Boys!' (1966), 'The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes' (1969) and 'The Strongest Man in the World' (1975).
After his contract with Disney had expired, Russell elected to follow his father into professional baseball, albeit in the minor leagues, before a shoulder injury forced retirement from the sport in June 1973.
Russell made very little of note in the following five years, before taking the title role in John Carpenter’s 1979 biopic, 'Elvis', for which he won a Grammy nomination. It was a role he was to reprise, albeit in an unaccredited cameo, in Robert Zemeckis’ Oscar-winning 'Forrest Gump' (1994). In 1980, he starred in director Robert Zemeckis’ comedy 'Used Cars', before taking a central role in John Carpenter’s sci-fi classic 'Escape from New York' (1981). This was followed by another successful collaboration with Carpenter, in 1982’s 'The Thing', which established Russell as a strong presence within the Hollywood action genre.
Other notable roles followed, including Mike Nichols’ 'Silkwood' (1983), and 'Swing Shift' (1984), where he met Goldie Hawn. Although Russell had been married before, to his co-star in "Elvis", Season Hubley, the couple hit it off. Russell divorced Hubley in 1984, and he and Hawn have cohabited ever since, starring together in 'Overboard', in 1987.
Russell’s other memorable roles include a further John Carpenter film, 'Big Trouble in Little China' (1986), 'Tequila Sunrise' (1989), 'Tango and Cash' (1989) and 'Executive Decision' (1996). He also went on to make a poorly-received sequel to 'Escape from New York', 'Escape from L.A.' (1996), for which he received a co-writing credit. He has most recently appeared in 'Vanilla Sky' (2001) and 'Dark Blue' (2003). He lives in Los Angeles.
