William Shatner was born 22 March 1931 in Montreal, Canada. He is forever known as Captain Kirk, the heroic starship leader on the 1960s TV series Star Trek. Shatner also played Kirk in a series of Star Trek movies (and directed 1989's Star Trek V: The Final Frontier) and starred in the TV series T.J. Hooker and Rescue 911. Despite those successes, Shatner's allegedly wooden acting became something of a pop culture joke (as did his toupee). In the late 1990s he poked fun at his own image in a series of commercials for the Internet company Priceline.Com. Shatner is also the author of the TekWar series of science fiction novels. Shatner married his fourth wife, Indiana native Elizabeth Martin, on February 13, 2001. Shatner's third wife, Nerine Kidd, drowned in a swimming pool accident in August of 1999.
