Theron's role in "North Country" granted her this year's GLAAD's Vanguard Award, honoring media professionals whose work have increased the understanding of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. Melissa Etheridge was the recipient of GLAAD's Stephen F. Kolzach Award, an honor given each year to an openly gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender media professional who has inspired and supported the GLAAD community.

The Irish actor was not at her side at the recent Academy Awards and Bafta Awards, prompting speculation that the relationship was over. Although there has been no official confirmation, a friend of Theron's told The Sun the relationship "is well and truly over." "They just grew apart. It wasn't always easy because filming often kept them apart for months," the friend was quoted as saying. The couple had consistently denied they had plans to marry, saying they were happy as they were.
