Kate Elizabeth Winslet (born October 5, 1975 in Reading, Berkshire, England) is an English actress most famous for her role in the 1997 blockbuster movie Titanic. She scored her first professional gig at 11, dancing opposite the Honey Monster in a commercial for a kids' cereal. She started acting lessons around the same time, which led to formal training at a performing arts high school. Her career began on television, with an appearance in an episode of the BBC medical drama Casualty in 1989. Her first big break came at age 17 in Heavenly Creatures (1994). Kate Winslet has also appeared as a singer with her single "What If" from the "Christmas Carol: The Movie" soundtrack. On November 22, 1998 she married director Jim Threapleton with whom she has a daughter. After her divorce in 2001, she began a relationship with director Sam Mendes and married him on May 24, 2003. Their son was born on December 22, 2003.
