Each of the three leading men, Brad Pitt, 'Quinn, Adian' , and Anthony Hopkins, appeared in three recent films based on gothic horror novels. Pitt played Louis in Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994), Quinn played Ship Captain Walton in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994), and Hopkins was Dr. van Helsing in _Making Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) (TV)_ .

The title refers to the biblical fall from innocence . In Sweden however, the title was translated as "Höstlegender" meaning Legends of the (season) Fall (as in autumn).
This movie was originally to be filmed in Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada), but the city officials refused to remove several trees (which would have been replaced after the end of filming). Production then moved to Montana.
